Easter

Easter makes the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a day of great rejoicing and merry-making. Celebrated between 22nd March and 25th April on the Sunday following the full moon, Easter ceremonies correspond to Passover, the Jewish festival of yore. It may be noted that Jesus Christ was a born Jew who propounded a different faith with many concepts and festivals getting changed to the new one. In fact almost all over the world the festivals are generally reckoned by the moon's phases and never by the sun's movement. So, we have Easter determining the Good Friday while Easter itself getting determined by a particular full moon day. Incidentally, this led to the belief that Christ was not born on December 25, the day when day starts lengthening its duration. Deeming it to be an auspicious day the day when day starts becoming longer and hence very welcome to those climes of Europe and UK where cold and darkness remain a psychological anathema to the dwellers of that region - and ignorant about actual day of birth of Jesus, the people started this day as Christ's birthday to club two very auspicious happenings.

Easter symbolizes the ultimate victory of good over evil. Feasts are given, sweets exchanged and Joyous processions are taken out on this occasion. Edible as also artificial and hard boiled eggs are given on Easter as gifts. The story related to this festival is given below: There was a man named Joseph, an honest and righteous man.

He went to the Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus after the Crucifixion. Then he took it down and wrapped in a linen shroud and laid him in rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever been laid. The women who had come with him followed. And then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. But they found the stone covering the tomb rolled away and when they went in they didn't find the body. while they were stupefied with an amazing perplexity about the disappearance of the body .............. behold...... two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. As they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them: "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, that the son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful man and be crucified, and on the third day rise."

Thus the Bible describes the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians congregate in large masses and thank Christ, the Saviour of whole humanity on the occasion of Easter.
